Denis Kelly served in World War I from 22nd April, 1914, until its close on 11th November, 1918, being a soldier of the 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He went to war on the day his wife gave birth to a healthy boy, and through sheer luck and good fortune he did survive the war. Edward Kelly, son of Denis Kelly, served during World War II. He was one of the first to step through the gates of Bergen-Belsen on its liberation, having served in the infantry prior to transfer to Mps. The camp was liberated by the British on 15th pril, 1945, and over the next 30 days the death rate dropped from 500 a day to less than 100 a day. More and more people continued to meet with death in the face of their liberation for many reasons, some of which has been needlessly blamed on the British, despite their heroic efforts.
