Description

In this final installment of the Horsestory series, learn about the amazing contributions of horses and mules in modern times. In the early days of our country, if there was work to be done, it was likely performed by a horse-everything from delivering books via horse-drawn bookmobiles to moving an entire village of houses. As time passed, most of the brute strength tasks of the horse were taken over by machines. But something important was lost in that transition from living creatures to metal. A horse is more than a machine. Relationships that formed between man and horse as they worked together can never be replicated by machinery. In all the many months Siegfried has been my comrade, my protector; he has carried me out of trouble many times; he has listened for me and warned me of any danger. I had always relied upon him in a thousand and one situations. I had cried on his shoulder when I was in despair, and he had even made me laugh at some of his antics. He had never complained when I had nothing to give him, not even water. To me he had not been "just a horse," he had been my best friend, a friend in a thousand, full of warmth and understanding. -a German soldier, warfarehistorynetwork.com Horsestory III covers the years from the late 1920s to modern times. While horses still served in a limited capacity in war and work, a shift occurred to more recreational roles. Learn about the horses who delivered books and carried nurses to remote Appalachia, horses who took the adventurous on cross-country trips, famous and not-so-famous racehorses, as well as equine movie stars. You'll also meet the heroic mules of the Burma campaign in World War II; Reckless, a little mare who fought valiantly with Marines in the Korean War; horses used for shrimp fishing; mules who continue to deliver the mail; BLM Mustangs, and much more!
